Alternative for Mac
An Adobe Acrobat alternative for Mac
What Adobe Acrobat does well
Acrobat is the standard for a reason. Its PDF editing goes deeper than anything else: reflowing text, editing images, plus building and filling forms, redaction, legally recognized e-signatures and OCR, with cloud sync across Windows, Mac, web and mobile. For legal, finance or document-heavy work, it's the safe professional choice.
That depth comes as an Acrobat Standard or Pro subscription; there's no one-time version, and pricing varies by region and plan.
Where Fileknife is different
Most people don't need Acrobat's full depth. They need to shrink a PDF to email it, merge a few files, make a scan searchable or turn photos into a PDF. Fileknife does those on your Mac for a one-time price, with no subscription and no upload.
Fileknife is not a full PDF editor. It won't build forms, redact to a legal standard or match Acrobat's editing. If that's your work, keep Acrobat. If you only need the common jobs done quickly and privately, Fileknife covers them.

What I tested
For the everyday case I compressed a 40 MB scanned PDF to about 4 MB in Fileknife on the Mac. Acrobat compresses too, with more control, but for a quick shrink-to-email this is the faster path, and nothing leaves your machine.
Choose Adobe Acrobat if…
Choose Adobe Acrobat if you need professional editing, forms, redaction or legally recognized e-signatures, or you work across Windows and Mac with cloud sync.
Choose Fileknife if…
Choose Fileknife if you mostly compress, merge, split, OCR or convert PDFs, you want to pay once, and you'd rather keep documents on your Mac.
Questions
Is there a one-time version of Adobe Acrobat?
Not currently. Acrobat Standard and Pro are sold as subscriptions. Fileknife is a one-time purchase that covers the common PDF jobs, though not Acrobat's full professional editing.
Can Fileknife edit PDF text like Acrobat?
No. Deep text and image editing, forms or redaction are Acrobat's territory. Fileknife handles page-level work such as compress, merge or split, OCR and images to PDF.
Does Fileknife do OCR to make a scan searchable?
Yes. Fileknife runs OCR on your Mac using Apple's on-device text recognition, so a scanned PDF becomes searchable without uploading it.
Does Acrobat upload my files?
Acrobat works locally but also offers cloud storage and sync. Fileknife never uploads: every PDF job runs on your Mac.
Is Fileknife a cheaper Adobe Acrobat?
It's cheaper for the common jobs, as a one-time purchase rather than a subscription, but it isn't a full Acrobat replacement. For deep editing, forms or redaction, keep Acrobat.
Can Fileknife fill or edit PDF forms?
No. Forms, redaction and deep text editing are Acrobat's territory. Fileknife handles compress, merge or split, OCR and images to PDF.
